The Pursuit of Harmony in Italy

It's never been more excited than road trip with driving and tracking new road street with Audi. In spring 2008, I trusted my skill to drive my spring driving vacation from Ingolstadt, Germany to Como, Italy with Audi S5.
I met a few friends in Germany. Spent a quality time with friends talking, sharing, laughing, and had a great dinner. After dinner, I settled into the S5 cockpit. One of the road trip tips by driving is choosing the right car to take you safe and comfort for a long way driving. I started my engine and went forward, ready to enjoy the road to Lake Como, Italy.
Picture Gallery, Interactive Maps

Autobahan (A96) toward Austria

The full moon brightened the rolling hills of the Bavaria along A96 towards the Austrian border. The clouds were abundant but thin and very high. It reflected the moon light to illuminate the beautiful agriculture landscape in a much better way than the green night vision goggle. The rolling hills were filled with yellow flower plants called Raps. This plant produces oil that later is processed for bio-diesel.
Bayern Drei and Antenne Bayern were two of my favorite radio stations. The timing could not be any better. The road opened up. A long stretch of empty Autobahn came to my target range. Bayern Drei played the theme song from Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop. I dropped the gear from sixth to fourth and went so fast toward this road.
Driving to Lake Como was a joyful driving in its own class. Earlier, from the top of the mountain, I looked down this steep and lush brow and there lied hairpins that snaked towards Lake Como. Not only the hairpins got me excited, but also the zigzags between the hairpins that were shaped by the contours of the mountain. I could not ask for more. I waited at the top till the oncoming traffic from the bottom passed me.
Coming to the second hairpin, I braked hard with the right foot, I clutched in and shifted to second, I moved my left foot to the brake paddle to do the rest of the trail braking and setup my right foot for the upcoming acceleration to rotate the car again. As I neared the apex, I did left-right-left turn this time and then I was on the gas. It was almost perfect on the second one. Ninety eight more hairpins were probably still waiting for me before I would arrive at Lake Como. This was better than…uhm…I could not think of anything else. This was the only thing I had in my mind. This was ecstasy

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
The car drift and rotation were communicated through the cocoon-like leather sport seat to my spine so I could perform the necessary minute adjustment on the power, the braking, and the steering. It was an amazing human-machine bio feedback system. At this moment I was the Iron Man!
In the slightly overcast balmy morning, with barely any sleep but fully energized, my date, Audi S5, and I board a ferry at Cadenabbia, a town just south of Menaggio, with the destination Bellagio. Many travel programs and books have been published about this region. It is not hard to imagine why. This is the land of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michaelangelo.
When the ferry is about at the midpoint between Cadenabbia and Bellagio, the view before me is beyond fantastic. The mountains in this region are confident mountains. They are not shy. They go straight up without any hesitation. It creates amazing backdrops for the colorful coastal towns along the shores. And these coastal towns are separated from the inland towns by these giants.

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps

The steep brows and the meandering coast lines make it impossible for the road engineers to build the straightest roads. Because of these characteristics, the towns here have a lot more hairpins than the ten hair saloons in my neighborhood. So if you are a hairpin nut, this will be your heaven on earth.
Since water is the source of life after the energy of the Sun, it is very easy to see why this body of the dark, marine-blue water, originating from the Lombardy glaciers, supports the incredible vibrant atmosphere. Everything here; the colors of the Italian architecture villas, the scent of the blooming rainbow flowers, and the sound of the chirping birds seem to be more vivid. It is hard to describe in words. It is the inner feeling I experience by being here.
Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
The lush colorful vegetations electrify the already gorgeous panoramic scenery. This place is an ecstasy pill for the visual cortex. This is one of the few places that I will go back again and again because I will always learn and experience something new about the land, the people, the culture, the roads, and myself.

Bellagio, Italy

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
Disembarking at Bellagio, I quickly find a parking spot. At 9 am, the restaurant hostesses, waiters, and waitresses are setting up outdoor tables and chairs on Italian gardens, terraces and promenades. The morning sun is finally able to break through the thinning clouds. At the top of the mountains, fresh snows deposited last night give the bright white auras. Colorful flower beds and hanged flower pots are everywhere adorning stores, hotels, and restaurants
The city cobblestone roads add the already historical ambiance of the Italian architectures. Almost all structures here have the privilege to witness humanity since the Roman’s time. Were they able to talk to me, I would be having a time travel journey on top of my driving vacation. It would be like listening to bed time stories from my grandparent the other twenty eight grandparents before them.

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
Bellagio, like many towns in this region, is built on uneven land. The narrow small streets and alleys go up and down in so many directions. Strolling through this labyrinth and not worrying about getting lost is the best way to discover the magic hidden in many nooks and crannies. Craft stores, fancy boutiques, restaurants, hotels, and bakeries provide all kind of the enjoyment of living. An old grandma sitting outside a store greeting passer by is not only a postcard moment but a day-to-day occurrence here in this town.
Picture GalleryInteractive Maps

The pace of live here is at snail pace. Why would it be otherwise? The serene atmosphere induces peaceful minds. People in this town radiate contentment. There is no other place to go to because this is the place to be.

Drive to Como Town

After a few hours of relaxation at Bellagio, I set the navigation system to Como, one of the biggest towns on the lake. I decline the navigation system recommendation to take the ferry route. So, I follow the street sign to Como till the navigation system picks to Como. This road hugs the coastline all the way to Como.
Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
One time at another town, the navigation system recommended me to take a short cut due to traffic conditions. A smart and very exciting feature I thought at first until I found out that my car would not fit on the road it recommended. Imagine how narrow the street was when an my Audi S5 could not fit. On each side of the road were two rows of two stories houses. There was no side walk. The houses’ front doors were right on the edge of the street.
It is about as wide as the 18-wheeler truck, but it is a two-lane road without the middle lane marking. It would not make sense I guess to put the middle marking because the two halves would be so narrow that only Smart cars would fit. Even more interesting this road literally cuts through old towns. From time to time, I see similar color and architecture on two opposing houses. I just get the impression that I am actually snaking through what used to be their living room.

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps

I thought that after three Audi Driving Experience programs, one go kart intensive instruction program, and driving vacations in some of the most treacherous mountains near Cusco-Peru, Las Alpujarras-Spain, and Tibet, I would be ready for any kind of non-off-road roads. Well, I am proven wrong once again. This time, I am tested and challenged by impatient Italian drivers.

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps

Skinny Fiats and Renaults, tiny milk trucks, motorcycles, and bicycles rule this road! They rampage this road at a very high speed and they take aggressive maneuvers. I apply all skills I have learned, at the end, I still have to pull to the side because grandpas and grandmas on rustic Italian outdoor cafes are flagging me with the blue with yellow diagonal stripe handkerchiefs.
Picture GalleryInteractive Maps

Every lesson I was taught to smooth my driving to get the best line, I apply it today to no avail. My heartbeat goes higher and higher and finally, I have to succumb and let the white milk truck to pass me.
My Audi S5 is similar to Le Mans track where there are multiple classes of vehicles competing; the skinny cars, the tiny trucks, the motorcycles, the bicycles, and the regular cars. No wonder they are so many Italian names in the Grand Prix history. They are born racers. Even grandpas and grandmas drive at blistering speed on this winding road. Someday I will understand how the most serene and content people of Bellagio turn into aggressive drivers once they are behind the Fiats and the Renaults.
For the moment, since my ego cannot handle the defeat easily, I blame the narrow road. It turns out the Italian drivers are the ones with the unfair advantage. They don’t have to slow down when there is oncoming traffic. They just keep their rapid speed constant through the zigzags, and switch backs.

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps

All in all, it is a very fine driving adventure, especially after I take time to bring my heart beats to normal by enjoying the postcard perfect sceneries from the various vista points along with my car.

Como

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
Driving to the center of Como, I see the parked milk truck that passed me forty minutes ago. Turning onto the Lungo Lario Trieste main waterfront street, the traffic gets really busy. Near the roundabout I see rows of Ducatis, BMWs, Hondas, Suzuki racing motorcycles parked like the Deutsche Bahn railway table. Across the street at the Golosita corner outdoor cafĂ©, the riders are congregating and enjoying the beautiful sunny day. The red, yellow, green, blue, and orange riders’ customs and helmets add to the already colorful ambience of this town.

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
This street is filled with many aromatic Italian restaurants. Hundreds of people are having lunch with their families, friends, and lovers. Seafood is the specialty. The daily catches from the Lake Como are the highlights of the menus around town.
Driving this wide S5 on the narrow cobblestone street creates some scene when there is oncoming traffic. Some Italians noticed the “D” Euro license plate and greeted, “Guten Morgen.” Others are probably just wondering; who is this ridiculous tourist who jams his large car onto this narrow street? Fortunately, looking at the parked Porsche Cayenne, BMW 5 series, and Mercedes E class cars, I take comfort from the fact that they are many ridiculous Italians too.
There is nothing special going on here. This is the typical weekend day when locals enjoy the beautiful day with friends and families. With the beauty this place offers, it doesn’t require any special event for this place to give away its extraordinary charms.

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
“Entro prego, vi renderò un pranzo squisito,” restaurant hosts and hostesses along this road are fishing for customers. I settle on a restaurant that still has the best outdoor table for one. The row of blooming cherry trees add contrast to the picture perfect lake view. A small amphibious plane is taking off from the middle of the lake. Several ferry boats are shuttling the cars and people between ports. A flock of pigeons is feasting on bread crumbs offered by little kids.

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
I pick one dish out of the standard five-dish Italian meal. I have many hours of driving ahead of me and probably eight hundreds more hairpins to do. So, I can’t eat too much. When the local baked fish topped with homemade tomato sauce arrives on my table, I am unimpressed. It looks very plain compared to how the French chefs decorate their chef-d'oeuvre. But when I put the small slice of the fish on my mouth, this local chef authenticates his magic. The soft texture of the fish slowly melts and the tasty juice combined with the homemade tomato sauce create a seductive culinary ensemble. What a perfect day in Como!

The pursuit of harmony

Picture GalleryInteractive Maps
It is after midnight and I am staring at the ceiling the four-person sleeper cabin of City Night Line train bound for Amsterdam from Munich. I am sharing this cabin with a German business man traveling to Brussels, a Netherlands grandpa coming home after visiting his son and his family in Innsbruck, and a young Australian backpacker who is on his 9th month on the road. Each of us has stories from our life journeys. But tonight our journeys cross path on this train, maybe only for this only one time, but then again maybe not.

As I am about to fall asleep, my mind drifts back to Lake Como. The word “harmony” comes to mind. The rhythm of life and the beautiful natural setting are in accordance creating the ambiance of contentment. Come to think of it, I feel the same way about my date, the S5. Technology, craftsmanship, sportsmanship, engineering, and emotion blend perfectly into one.

Drifting asleep, I promise myself to go back to Lake Como again and again till one day I finally find harmony in my own life.

Exploring Beijing with Audi A4L

This was my trip with Audi A4L in Beijing in October 2010. A little bit late but I would like to share my experiences in Beijing with amazing Audi A4L that made my trip tremendously fun!

Audi in China

A quick glance will not note anything special about this white 2010 A4L. The extra 2.36 inches leg room for the back passengers doesn’t impact the dynamic roof line and the original well proportioned sporty silhouette. Unless there is a standard A4 next to it, most people will not even notice the difference. However, once we sit in the back, the extra leg room is greatly appreciated. Since 2000, Audi has been very successful in selling A6L in China. A4L is definitely following its brother’s footstep. Foreign or international driving licenses are not recognized in China. A foreigner must apply for a local permit to drive. So, for this trip, I am being chauffeured around instead. Being a passenger in an Audi, which I rarely do, gives me a different perspective.

Forbidden City

Beijing roads are in grid, so they are relatively easy to study. There are ring roads around the city—they are not circular but rectangular—with Tiananmen as the center. Today, our first stop of the day is the Forbidden City. This historical place was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 by UNESCO and has the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. Built in 1406, it housed 24 emperors and two dynasties.

After walking through a massive towering gate, we arrive at the outer courtyard. From this vantage point the vastness of the place can be felt. Today, there are close to 1,000 buildings with over 8,000 rooms in an area that is about one fifthNew York City Central Park. Images from The Last Emperor movie come to mind. The yellow wavy roofs, large and tall red columns, ornate carvings on the walls and horizontal beams, vibrant and colorful mosaics, and marble floors highlight the imperial architecture. The gate to the inner courtyard seems so far away from where we stand. Excited, we start to walk towards it.

Qianmen Street

Qianmen Street

Turning left from Dongchang’an Jie onto the street that lines the Tiananmen square, we head south towards Qianmen Street. Originally built 570 years ago during the Zhentong Period of the Ming Dynasty, Qianmen Street has gone through several renovation projects over many generations. This saturated-by-history street today features colorful and ornate Chinese structures modeled on the ones from the 1920’s and 30’s. Many buildings have red, gold, blue intricate mosaics, bright red thick columns, and shiny green roofs. The grand and tall five arches Qianmen Wupailou structure welcomes people to this pedestrian-and-tram-only shopping street. Birdcage, rattle drum, and sugar-coated haws streetlamps invite first comers to continually explore the hidden gems. And, at nights, the buildings on this street glow like gold bars.

During the Ming Dynasty this street served as a trading and shopping center. Today, almost six centuries later, it is still true to its original purpose. It is as easy to shop for traditional garments worn by the people of Beijing for centuries as to shop for modern western clothing. International western brands such as H&M, Rolex, Swatch, Zara, and Sephora can be found next to stores selling silk pajamas, Chinese knots, cloth shoes, and artworks.

The eastern scents of Peking duck, deep-fried twisted dough stick, and steamed dumplings mixed with the modern aromas of western franchise cafes, fried chicken and hamburger fast food restaurants make us think about food even when we are not hungry. A trip to this place won’t be complete without dining at the famous Quanjude Roast Duck restaurant. Originally founded in 1864, the relatively new elegant large and airy Chinese dining hall, filled with ornaments and giant paper chandeliers, transports diners back in time. Each duck served here comes with a certificate of authenticity. Here, the passion for making the perfect Peking duck is similar to the one for making the perfect wine.

The perfect Pecking Duck
Following the morning exploration of the city center, we head out of town in the northeast direction. After about one hour drive (60km), through some elevated city highways and ring roads, Jingcheng Express way, and local access roads towards Huairou city, we follow the sign for Mutianyu through a winding mountain road. There are several villages with narrow and uneven gravel roads to pass.

Audi A6Ls and A8Ls are also often seen parked in Hutongs. The residences here are very creative in finding small openings to park their cars. The long wheelbase version of A6 and A4 are very popular in China because these versions bring the luxury, comfort, and experience that are usually only available in the top of the line full-size class into the small and mid-size classes. To date, among global luxury car makers, only Audi recognized this market opportunity, and the Chinese are welcoming and embracing these models.

Great Wall – Mutianyu

The Great Wall is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, built and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century, and stretches for 6700 km. One would have to drive on I-80 from San Francisco, California to Manhattan, New York, and then drive back as far as Iowa City, Iowa to cover the comparable distance.

There are several designated areas for tourists to visit the Great Wall because the majority of the structures are not maintained and crumbling. Mutianyu is less crowded than the popular Badaling but it offers an equally spectacular experience.

There are two options to get to the wall from the parking lot; one hour steep hike or a few minutes cable car ride. We opt for the cable car ride. The view from the lift chair is breathtaking. The deep valleys, rolling tops, and the immenseness of the land instill a sense of awe. To get back down to the parking lot, during the summer time, visitors can take a luge-like slide. The slide track serpentines down the steep mountain side. Unfortunately today, the slide is not open . Snow can still be seen on the ground and it is very cold.

Once we get to the top of one of the watch towers, we are mesmerized by the view. Mutianyu Great Wall winds just slightly over 2 km tracing rolling mountains and high and narrow ridges. Looking in one direction we can see the wall snakes up and down the mountain’s contour. The saw-tooth shape of the parapets reminds us the original purpose of this mega structure. The low fog today shrouds some distant parts of the wall. The lush green vegetation carpets the surrounding grounds. Many trees around here are just as old as the wall. We walk the wall in silence hoping that these ancient stones will tell us some stories.

Hutongs and Nanluogu Xiang

Back in Beijing, crisscrossing the city center, through the passenger windows, there are small alleyways tucked within large blocks of modern skyscrapers. These alleyways are known as Hutongs and there are thousands of them. Strolling or cycling is the best way to explore and experience how the city used to be nearly 800 years ago. Since Genghis Khan’s time, the people of Beijing have built single-story homes with tiled roofs, facing into a central courtyard. From the labyrinth of crumbling grey alleyways, one cannot see the houses as they are protected by high walls.

From a corner of a Hutong, one can watch children playing soccer, men working in a tiny workshop dimly lit by a single bulb, street vendors on a bicycle with a wagon attached selling foods, rickshaw drivers taking locals home, old men in black outfits carrying songbirds in bamboo cages, and a medicine man scooping a cup of mysterious elixir from a big jar filled with yellowish liquid and hundreds of dead scorpions.

Just north of the Forbidden City, invoked by the entrepreneurial spirit of local designers, Nanlougu Xiang evolved from a typical Hutong into the city center of Bohemian life. Here, locals go to shop for home-grown fashion, jewelry, artworks and crafts at hip boutiques. At night, the alley is filled with aromas of international cuisines. The new generation lounges at bars and restaurants over dumplings, tapas, and glowing cocktails. For us, Nanlougu Xiang is a perfect place to find keepsakes to bring home.

Audi Forum, Beijing
For Audi enthusiasts, a visit to Beijing will not be complete without visiting Audi Forum in Beijing. From the Tiananmen gate, the Forum is three (large) city blocks to the east. Located in one of the most prestigious shopping malls in Beijing, Oriental Plaza, this Forum attracts the most visitors among Audi Forums in the world. Over 1000 people stop by the Forum daily. In the evening, the Forum also hosts many events covering a variety of topics; health, wine, jewelry, charity, music, and others.

For the discerning future Audi owners, the Audi Exclusive Design Studio at Audi Forum offers a large array of customization options. Here, paint strips fill up a wall of this studio providing an array of color shades to pick. A variety of leather, fabric, and wood insert combination options, color and texture, are available to the customer who wants to create his own interior ambient color design. A collection of sporty rims are also on display for anyone who wants to customize his car external experience.

There is no sales person at this Forum. Existing and prospective owners are greeted by Brand and Product Specialists. They are there to help visitors learn more about Audi heritage, technologies, and product lines. The contemporary modern style interior, the collections of Audi historical replicas, and the current Audi product lines and options in this Forum, together, produce a relaxing and inviting, technology and art museum ambience.

Sanlitun Bar Street
Traffic during commute hours in Beijing can be very tiring. Long waits and bumper to bumper cars moving at a snail’s pace are daily occurrences. The weather in Beijing can be draining to its inhabitants. Bone-chilling temperatures with arctic wind chill factor in the early spring can be made worse by a sand storm coming from the desert. When this happens, the sky is turned into brownish yellow and the visibility is reduced to just a few tens of meters. Additionally, it is very hard to breathe as there are so many particles in the air.

Thankfully, in this apocalyptic weather, our A4L isolates us from the nature’s wrath. The front and back silky-smooth leather seats, the extra leg room in the back, the noise reduction material used in the car interior, and the concert-hall quality audio system create a tranquil oasis for us. The rear passengers can adjust the rear temperature separately from the front by adjusting the controls found just behind the middle front-passenger hand rest.

Over two dozen bars string this narrow tree-lined Sanlitun street. Each bar offers a unique entertainment to its expats and local patrons. A dance club, and bars of all sorts including punk, Irish, karaoke, cigar, jazz/blues, table dance, Belgian, sport, and fish-and-chip are just a few genres that can be spotted easily from the outside colorful decors and neon lights. Having trouble to choose one, we decide to just start at the beginning of the street and we will see how far we get at the end of the night.
